Israel is acknowledged as a global leader in ag and water tech for a variety of reasons, including government support and lessons learned from the local shortage of natural resources, which has fostered innovative methods and technologies for ‘growing more with less,’ and the move towards data-enabled technology and IoT (Internet of Things) technologies.
The Israeli Agrifood tech space is also booming, with over 800 start-ups (out of a total 8,000 Israeli start-ups from a population of 8 million!), and world-class universities including Technion (the MIT of Israel), Weizmann Institute and the Hebrew University all undertaking Agrifood tech research.
Israel’s amazing commercialisation ability (Israeli technology-transfer offices generate more revenue from IP sales than any other country except the United States) stems from the collaboration of academia, government and industry to create a start-up ecosystem that provides an efficient ‘packaging’ system for the flood of innovation it creates.
